1950-52
- The Wasaga Dairy was built in the early 1950s. The Dairy was
originally called "Borden's", although it was not owned
by the Borden's Milk company. The first owner's name was Mr. Pogue.
His father was a minister and his mother a teacher. The Pogue
family home was located just opposite from Borden's. and is now
called "The Carriage House". Borden's distributed milk
door to door to stores and homes throughout Wasaga Beach during
the summer season.
1962 - Earl and Ivadelle Besley, bought the
Dairy from Mr. Pogue. The Besleys had owned a cottage in Wasaga
Beach for several years before moving there from Shelburne, Ontario.
Their three daughters, Ruth, Sharon, and Judy as well as Judy's
husband, Craig Bellamy, had worked for Borden's, first for Mr.
Pogue and then for their parents. They began to distribute milk
and ice cream year round in the local area.
1967 - Wasaga Milk Products was formed. Sharon
(Besley) and her husband, Gerry Vanderburg, joined the Besleys
and made expansions to the milk distribution business and the
building. Loading docks were installed and offices were built.
Five refrigerated trucks serviced an area from Midland to Meaford
to Creemore.
1972 - Ruth (Besley) and her husband, David
White, became involved in the business and, with the exception
of 1991-92, operated the business until this year.
1985 - The milk distribution operation ended
and the area that had been used for the loading docks became converted
into a Mini Golf course.
2000 - Summer 2000 marks a change of hands for
the Wasaga Dairy and Mini Golf. The new owners, Sarah and John
Curtosi, also operate the Donato
House Hotel just next door on Mosley Street.
